Treasuring Nature
As one climate change catastrophe follows swiftly after another – the devastating flash floods in Nepal being the latest to dominate our news feeds – and as we see image after image of calamity and grief, it is easy to feel helpless. But as well as supporting rescue and recovery initiatives as best we can from afar, we can help by taking care of the natural environment in our own neighbourhoods.
I photographed this beautiful waterlily last Friday. I was greatly encouraged by it, because it shows that the pond, which was refurbished in January, is coming into its own.
It is also an example of nature resisting the harm that is so often perpetrated against it. Almost immediately after the refurbishment, the pond and its new pond plants were damaged – not once, but twice. On each occasion, we sought to repair the damage by re-introducing uprooted plants and hoping for the best. It was a relief to see them start to propagate and it is wonderful to see this lovely bloom.
